Pierre Gaillard

“I was there at the beginning of the rebirth of the Seyssuel vineyard with two winemaker friends, and I wanted to make wine in this legendary terroir individually. That is how the Asiaticus wine was born, named after the 1st century A.D. senato from Vienne, a famous patron and a great wine-lover.”

Pierre Gaillard has always been passionate about winemaking and oenology, and has now lived for thirty years in Malleval, where he set up his estate. At the heart of the Rhone valley, he produces a wide range of high-quality wines. In his cellar, Pierre follows his inspiration while respecting the “raw material”, the grape. In hisvineyards, he uses the most natural winemaking methods possible. With his partners, he began making wines on the Seyssuel hills in 1996, creating Vienne Wines, and then making his own wine, Asiaticus, on the Seyssuel hills.

The vintages

• The Vineyards
Grape variety: 100 % Syrah
Terroir: Seyssuel, hills facing south-west, schist. Surface area: around 1 hectare. Viticulture: Yield of 30 hl/ha; harvested by hand, strict selection of healthy and ripe grapes.

• In the Cellar
Vinification: Total destemming. Cold pre-fermentation maceration. Alcoholic fermentation at 35°C. Post-fermentation maceration at 30°C. Malolactic fermentation in barrels. Traditional vinification. A sequence of foot-treading, pumping over and rack and return brings about the best extraction of aromas and tannins, which gives Seyssuel wines all their power.
Maturing: 18 months in fine-grained oak barrels (from Allier and Nevers). 50% new barrels with oxygenation every four months.
