Julien Pilon

“I’d had the idea of making my own wines for a few years and in the end it was impossible to do it anywhere else than ‘at home’.”

I began making wine a short time ago on the 2010 vintage, making a point of producing wines that respect the terroir’s identity, giving both concentration and finesse. What I find particularly interesting is to show how much the idea of terroir is essential. My work in terms of selection during the harvesting, vinifi cation and maturing of grapes tends in this direction, and I try to respect the identity of each wine as much as possible. In the Seyssuel area, I make a white wine, Frontière, and will soon add a red wine, with Syrah vines that will soon go into production…

The vintages

• The Vineyards
Grape variety: 100 % Viognier.
Terroir: Seyssuel, on the left bank of the Rhone. This vineyard, the most northerly of the valley, faces west/south-west. Quartzite schist soil.
Viticulture: The density of the plantation is high, around 9 000 vine stocks per hectare.

• In the Cellar
Vinification: The grapes are harvested by hand, pressed, and then the juice is left completely to settle. Alcoholic fermentation at low temperatures is slow and malolactic fermentation is total.
Maturing: 10 months on lees with 30 % of new barrels.
