Pierre-Jean Villa

“A great wine is born exclusively from a respect for the soil and the fruit. Finally, it must express the balance between the typical features of the terroir and the ethics of the winemaker. It is something obvious and a real work ethic for me.”

In 2003 Pierre-Jean Villa joined the Vienne Wines trio and was its custodian until 2009. He then created an estate at the heart of the northern Rhone area and began his new life as a 100% independent winemaker. In the vineyard, his approach is to preserve the life of the soil in order to produce wines that are true to their terroir. In the cellar, he accompanies the grape’s development with light-handed vinification. His red wine Esprit d’Antan (Spirt of Yesteryear) comes from the Seyssuel vineyard and makes reference to the wines of the past.

The vintages

• The Vineyards
Grape variety: 100 % Syrah, ten-year-old vineyards.
Terroir: Seyssuel, schist and quartz hills covered in clay, moderate continental climate with hot, dry summers and regular rainfall the rest of the year.
Viticulture: cordon de Royat pruning on wires.

• In the Cellar
Vinification: partial destalking during harvest, then grapes are sorted on a shake table and transported to the vat on a conveyor belt. Maceration for 20 days in 600-litre half-size casks.
Maturing: 24 months in 600-litre half-size casks. Racking and blending 6 weeks before bottling.
